About This Spot

Stepping into Il Casolare, nestled along Berlin’s Grimmstraße, you’re met with an atmosphere that hums quietly with the buzz of a lively neighborhood gathering spot. It’s the kind of place where the clinking of glasses and low laughter blend with the steady rhythm of conversation, occasionally carried by the faint echo of voices in the room’s open, poster-lined interior. The pace here invites you to settle in without rush, to savor moments both familiar and a little bit adventurous.

This is a destination for those who appreciate the honest heart of Italian cooking – where the welcome might be a little brusque, yet the food emerges from the kitchen as a radiant contrast. Pizzas arrive fresh from the oven, with dough carefully blistered to just the right crispness, topped with vibrant, thoughtfully paired ingredients that hint at southern Italy’s sun-kissed simplicity. There’s a warmth to sharing dishes here, whether you’re tucking into a freshly pulled slice or stirring into pasta rich with seafood.

The charm of Il Casolare extends beyond the plates. Many choose to take their pizza to go, pairing it with bottled drinks bought next door, and head outside to enjoy Berlin’s canal-side green spots — a casual, unspoken ritual that speaks to the community’s laid-back spirit. Inside, the service might carry a hint of impatience, but it somehow fits the honest, unpolished character of the place. It’s a spot where locals and visitors alike gather not for polished perfection, but for genuine flavors and the chance to unwind in spontaneous company.

Whether it’s the tang of an aperol spritz, the richness of tiramisu following a shared meal, or the simple pleasure of an espresso to round out the evening, Il Casolare captures a slice of Italy with its heartfelt authenticity in the middle of Berlin’s vibrant Kreuzberg neighborhood. It’s a place to return to — for the food, yes, but also for those unpretentious moments of connection that linger long after the meal ends.

So it's well known that the service in this place is awful. I ordered an apfelschorle which came totally lukewarm, and asking for ice seemed akin to asking the waitress for her right arm. BUT the pizza is the best. Delicious, always. Large, fresh, hot, perfect. Totally recommend!

The pizza is tasty. Thin dough and crisp from the oven. We ordered with a bigger crowd but the food came quickly once ordered which took a while but still alright. Keep in mind that you can only pay by cash here. In terms of atmosphere the interior features many marker tags and posters. Could be cosy in a smaller group but there is a little echo in the room which makes it a bit harder to talk if you would talk to someone across the table. Service was alright. Overall friendly but sometimes a bit too casual: making a joke that they only have two types of wine red or white. Overall I like the food and would come back in summer to enjoy the pizza outside.

Very lively place. English Friendly. Authentic Italian Pizza and desserts. The location of the restaurant was also really great. Only negative thing was that we had to wait in line for 15 mins to get a place for two people. Many people ordered the pizza for takeaway. Bought beers in the neighbouring kiosk and went to nearby grass area where they can have food looking at the canal. It was a very lovely view too.

Authentic Italian food, personnel and atmosphere inside the heart of Berlin. Pasta, pizza, wine and dessert TOP! Definitely going again.

I take all my friends who visit here for a taste of italy :) Authentic pizza and tiramisu - so happy to find this delicious place with very affordable prices!! Always order the pizza for takeaway, buy beers at the späti nearby and then chill at the bridge or grassy areas. A great way to spend a summer night after work :) They slightly messed up my order once and they quickly whipped up the correct pizza without any problems - very friendly and sweet

Good pizza, delicious tiramisu but not the best atmosphere. To be honest, it feels like a busy trattoria in Italy. Noisy, chaotic, italian staff, dimmed lightning... Italians feel like home I think The food is really good. The pizza is thin and has a nice crust. The ingredients are nice. Tiramisu was really good. It was not that sweet and didn't taste like cheap alcohol. I could easily eat two portions I have mixed feelings about the restaurant though. The place is always packed and can be extremely noisy. Tables are so close to each other. There is a tiny room at the far end of the restaurant where the toilet is located. There is an old wooden showcase just near the toilet door. They use it to store cutlery and similar stuff. I can't say that it's the most hygienic place. Prices are average. Around 10 Euros for a pizza. Would I go there again? Probably yes but I would go there at the opening and get a nice table. I would go there only for food not to have a conversation with someone. It's not that easy to hear each other

Delicious italian food in a cozy space. Delicious pizza from a wood fired oven. Pasta dishes and desserts also on offer. Wall writing from earlier times is tastefully preserved with the addition of classic punk and hardcore posters.
